Jerry Hollendorfer’s Tivan wins Golden Nugget Stakes at Golden Gate Fields

By By Larry Stumes Tivan was a rare Jerry Hollendorfer-trained long shot at Golden Gate Fields when he rallied late to win his debut by a half-length at odds of 15-1 on Oct. 21.
The bettors didn’t make the same mistake in Saturday’s $64,675 Golden Nugget Stakes as Tivan went off the 2-1 second choice in the field of six 2-year-olds and made an even more impressive late run to pass 8-5 favorite Tribal War Chant in the final strides.
