By By Bruce Jenkins It’s a special time whenever the Cal football program honors Joe Roth, the gifted and endearing quarterback who died of cancer in 1977. Roth had a way of touching everyone who came into his tragically short life, and his name will always be associated with cherished afternoons at Memorial Stadium.
Saturday marked the annual Joe Roth Memorial Game, with UCLA in town, but by day’s end the Bears weren’t much for nostalgia. A once promising season took a dark, depressing turn in a 37-7 loss to the previously winless Bruins.
