‘Uncharted territory’ as Oakland City Council accused of violating City Charter

By By Kimberly Veklerov A top Oakland official accused city lawmakers of violating their oaths of office for enacting an ordinance that defies the City Charter and their own legal counsel.

The dispute is over which powers the new civilian-run Police Commission should have. Last week, the Oakland City Council voted to give the commission its own lawyer — outside the city attorney’s office — and authority over a civilian inspector general, who will review and audit the Police Department.
