Boatload of birdwatchers rescued when ferry goes aground near Berkeley

By By Dominic Fracassa The Berkeley Fire Department and the Coast Guard rescued 41 people and a dog from the waters about a half-mile from the Berkeley Marina Saturday afternoon after a ferry ran aground.

Rescue boats were dispatched to retrieve the ferry passengers after a distress call was sent out around 2:20 p.m., said Berkeley Fire Department Battalion Chief Bill Kehoe. The ferry had been chartered by a bird-watching group taking a tour of the region, Kehoe said. All were taken back to the Berkeley Marina.
