Oakland dealt Sean Doolittle, 30, and Ryan Madson, 36, to the Nationals for right-hander Blake Treinen, minor-league infielder Sheldon Neuse and minor-league left-hander Jesus Luzardo.
The Nationals (54-36) lead the NL East by 9½ games, but have endured plenty of late-game woes from their bullpen.
The right-hander spent the first nine seasons (2003-11) in the NL East with the Phillies.
