It is a wise philosophical syllogism that Samuel Adams posed in the following quote.
“A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy. While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue then will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader.”
The evidence of the downward spiral of principles is everywhere and in every system of We The People. It is in the last few prescient words of Adams statement that we realize a quiet understanding. The “internal invader” is the man in the Oval Office, although there is much evidence to suggest that he is in fact an “external” invader instead.
Whether you are a follower of Amy Vanderbilt and her tome on proper conduct on every occasion or just the recipient of your Mother and Fathers clear expressions regarding “behaving yourself properly”, we have all seen how the “ill-mannered”, the petulant”, “the surly” and the downright “ignorant” have been elevated to a status that makes you want to barf (a highly scientific term, eh). We now celebrate low life’s as if they were an example for us to follow. Some whose only claim to fame is that they rode the roller coaster of popularity because they had something to sell that young stupid people bought and arrived with bags of money and no class to go with it. These morally bereft folks hold some sort of sway over the direction of society courtesy of a media that seems hell-bent on celebrating the perverse, the degenerate and the vile. Sam Adams would be turning over in his grave if he could see what we have become.
But let us not forget that even with our faults and our failings, our idiosyncrasies and our foibles, we are the last best hope of freedom in a world whose “island of opportunity” is shrinking in size even as we speak. As we succumb to the tide of filth and garbage that is lapping at our doorsteps and allow it entrance into our homes and our lives we are losing the principles that made us great and ripping out of our children grasp the manners that will give them success in the larger worlds arena. Teach your children the principles and manners that are time-tested and proven and as the scriptures tell us to “raise up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it”. A solid start and a wise foundation secure the righteous path for each individual and ultimately the nation.
